Drake and I met due to catching each other’s eye from afar in class and around campus at Kansas State University. We both attended the same church every Sunday where our eyes would meet and we’d both quickly look away. I divulged to a friend about the cute boy I kept staring at and she ended up knowing him and decided to play matchmaker and set us up.
A week later Drake picked me up for coffee at Starbucks on a rainy, dreary October morning. So, there we spoke for the first time in his car on the way to our first date. Three weeks later that same cute boy led me up the fire escape onto the roof of Anderson Hall at K-State. (Illegal? Probably. Y’all can keep a secret, though right?) Waiting there for me was a sign that asked, “Make it Official?” and a dozen red roses. We sat up on that roof overlooking the little place that brought us together and chatting another two hours. That conversation hasn’t stopped since.
We married in my hometown of Paris, Texas and it didn’t get much better than that weekend. Everyone we cared about traveled from 18 different states to celebrate us and the day was in fact perfectly, us. My family’s personal blue willow dishes graced the tables with chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes, the drinks were flowing, our guests grand marched through the old hotel and every time I stopped and looked around and took in the moment, I realized everyone had the biggest smile on their face and I was married to my best friend.
It wouldn’t be our dance party though without Drake break dancing on the ground and ultimately ripping his tuxedo pants right down the butt and we didn’t give a care in the world. I know we will be dancing just as hard and ripping our pants when we are old and grey, and no feeling is quite as good as that.
