Drake and I had a class together during our time at Kansas State University, we would frequently catch glances both in class and at mass on Sundays at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. We had both been running into each other around Manhattan but had not had the courage to approach the other. Though, at a home football game I had dished to a friend about a guy that I kept seeing that I had a crush on. That friend ended up knowing Drake well and immediately wanted to set us up. Our mutual friend then later that evening saw Drake in Aggieville, where she told him about me.
This finally gave him the courage to ask me to get coffee with him at Starbucks at 9 AM on a Friday morning. It was a cold, rainy October morning where Drake came to pick me up at the Pi Beta Phi house where a few of my sorority sisters were watching him pick me up from the balcony above! I got in his car and off to Starbucks we went, and it was the best morning. We were immediately comfortable around each other and had so many things in common and could have talked all day if we had the time! From that day forward, we were inseparable.
When it came time for our three-year dating anniversary, Drake planned a surprise trip for the two of us for a long weekend to Seattle, Washington to visit the original Starbucks (now I am undoubtedly hooked on coffee because grad school!). So off we went, and he had a whole weekend of surprise activities planned for the two of us, which started with dinner, coffee ice cream at Molly Moon’s, and a ride on the Seattle Great Wheel at night. The following day we went to a series of sights throughout Seattle that were all accompanied with a hand-written letter from Drake relating every place we were at back to important aspects of our relationship. First, we started with breakfast at Portage Bay Cafe, where my letter explained our mutual love for brunch and my love for McDonald’s breakfast! Next, we visited Pike Place Market and the original Starbucks where my letter detailed our first date and how we knew from that day forward our lives had changed. We then visited the Starbucks Reserve Roastery, and Purple Wine Bar for lunch.
This letter explained how he had chosen this location due to purple being the color of our alma mater Kansas State, where we met, feel in love, and where he had asked me to be his girlfriend on top of Anderson Hall. Here we had a flight of rosé wines and our waiter was from Oklahoma where we both live now! After this we explored the beautiful botanical gardens before hitting the road to explore Rattlesnake Lake. As we drove it started to lightly snow, and I wondered if this would finally be the moment he would propose! As we walked towards the lake, Drake asked me to take a selfie even though we were under an umbrella. At the point, a person who was “taking nature pictures” approached us and asked if we wanted her to take our picture for us.
We then took off our jackets and put down the umbrellas and then before I knew it Drake was holding my hands and giving me the forever speech! He got down on one knee and then asked me to marry him with the most beautiful ring I could have ever dreamed of! I was so speechless and would have never imagined a proposal so thoughtful. We then took photos around the lake and FaceTimed our families. Then we visited Snoqualmie Falls and returned to Seattle to change before dinner. To celebrate, we had champagne and dinner at the top of Smith Tower, Seattle’s oldest skyscraper.
