Eile’s Birth

Photos by KE Documentary

I have been working really hard lately to practice what I preach when it comes to photography. I want to photograph my children and my life more often. I highly value those photos, but when I have a camera in my hands for what feels like all day, I want to go home and enjoy life and set the camera down to be in the moment. What I’ve realized is that there are so many memories I am not capturing by not taking the photos. One of my biggest regrets was not taking a lot of photos of our sweet Emberlynn when we first got her at 8 weeks old (see her story here). We were told in those first few months that she would probably be leaving to family quickly, and I didn’t pull my camera out nearly enough. It literally pains me! So I think it goes without saying that having Eile’s (pronounced eye-lee) birth photographed was very important to me.

I had this great plan- Jessica was going to be on call and come take them for us! We were all so excited! I was going to have one of my best friends capture a huge moment in our lives, but life had different plans. When Jessica told me she had a vacation about a month out from my due date, neither of us was worried. Most first pregnancies go late, and she would be back with plenty of time.

But as you may already know, plans changed and while Jessica was out of town, the doctors decided to bring Eile early. I was sent to the hospital 3 weeks early, and when I thought they may make the decision to bring her the next day, I got online and reached out to a group of fellow photographers to see if anyone might be available last minute the next day. Let me just take a break right now and say what an amazing group of photographers there are in DFW, who are always there to support each other. When I put the post up, several people responded, whom I had never even met before, who wanted to help.  Kourtnie of KE Documentary was the first to respond and told me she would be able to get to me within 30min if the need arose the next morning.

Sure enough, the doctors made the decision early the next morning that they wanted to get our girl here fast. They said I would be going straight into surgery and she would be here within an hour or so. I immediately messaged Kourtnie. Without having ever met me before, she answered the call and we met 30 minutes later, just as they were about to wheel me back. She was such an answered prayer, and put me at such ease. I really think I would have been devastated had we not been able to have someone there to take photos.

As you will see below, she did an amazing job and captured the story of that morning beautifully. These photos are some that we will cherish for eternity, and we are so, so grateful for Kourtnie stepping in to save the day!

After she left, I also caught a few photos myself once we were in our room and family started coming to se us. Then when we got home, Emberlynn got to hold her for the first time and it was so special! I will make sure to point out when Kourtnie’s photos end, and my personal photos begin. I hope you enjoy a peek into such a super personal part of my life.
